Cross-border movement of goods within the EU is subject to reporting requirements. Companies must submit their imports and exports electronically to the Federal Statistical Office (DESTATIS) on a monthly basis. Since the 2022 reporting year, new rules apply: an expanded list of "type of transaction," the declaration of the country of origin for all exports, and the mandatory indication of the VAT identification number of the trading partner in the country of destination. In addition, DESTATIS has only accepted XML files since January 1, 2023 – the previous CSV upload procedure has been discontinued.
